Backyard: Pond Build

  • Pond Build 2013

Location and Information

I wanted to build a large pond and this corner of the yard was perfect due to the shade the trees would provide. After a weekend of digging we realized we’d need a large area to put the dirt or pay to dump it, so the garden was born. I had to cap off the sprinklers and redirect a pipe to water the new garden we were in the process of building. From start to finish it took 10-12 days to complete the first phase which consisted of digging and relocating all the dirt, laying huge 20’-30’ pond liner and filling the 1100 gallon pond.

The second phase was to add the skimmer, waterfall and pipe for the garden. This was a trial and error build since it was my first time. The skimmer was pretty easy to do, while the waterfall and piping was a little more difficult. This task took 5-6 days to complete for a total cost of $750.00 for everything. We got a smoking deal off craigslist for the skimmer, waterfall and large rocks @80 bucks. Doing it ourselves saved us thousands of dollars!
